Novi, MI – In a game defined by relentless defense and explosive plays, the Novi Wildcats powered past the Hartland Eagles with a decisive 20-7 victory. The Wildcats claimed their first win of the season, leveling their record to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Hartland remained winless at 0-2.
From the opening whistle, Novi asserted control. A meticulously crafted 14-play, 64-yard drive consumed more than nine minutes of the first quarter, culminating in a perfectly placed 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Johnny Aurilia to Christian Gillings. With David Galligan’s extra point, the Wildcats seized an early 7-0 advantage. The drive not only established momentum but also showcased Novi’s ability to dictate the pace of the game.
Gillings, however, wasn’t content with just offensive highlights. Late in the second quarter, with Hartland threatening to respond, he intercepted a pass and dashed 60 yards for a momentum-swinging touchdown. The defensive score pushed Novi’s lead to 14-0 heading into halftime, leaving Hartland searching for answers on both sides of the ball.
After the break, Novi extended their lead with a dazzling 91-yard touchdown play. This time, it was Gillings again, demonstrating his versatility by connecting with wide receiver Jaden Vondrasek on a deep pass. Vondrasek evaded defenders en route to the end zone, sending the Wildcats’ crowd into a frenzy. Though the extra point was blocked, Novi’s lead swelled to 20-0.
Hartland showed signs of life in the third quarter. Grant Pawlak punched in a 4-yard rushing touchdown after a hard-fought 11-play, 71-yard drive. Alex Hernandez added the PAT, narrowing the score to 20-7. Despite this effort, turnovers and missed opportunities continued to hamper the Eagles’ progress. Novi’s defense, spearheaded by Gillings’ two interceptions, stood tall, forcing a total of four turnovers and suffocating Hartland’s passing game.
Key to Novi’s success was their dominance in time of possession, holding the ball for nearly 30 minutes compared to Hartland’s 18. On the ground, Aurilia led the charge with 73 rushing yards on 12 carries, supported by Logan Ellison and Anthony Madafferi, who chipped in 40 combined yards. This balanced attack contrasted sharply with Hartland’s one-dimensional approach, which leaned heavily on the run and mustered just 51 passing yards.
Defensively, the Wildcats were a force. Colin Edwards and Mario Miminllari contributed key tackles for loss, while Reece Pippin’s consistent pressure on the line helped shut down Hartland’s offense. Gillings’ defensive heroics, including 60 interception return yards and a touchdown, underscored his standout performance as the game’s most impactful player.
For Hartland, Pawlak and Easton Culver provided glimmers of hope in the rushing game, combining for 78 yards on 12 carries. On defense, Alexander Criscuolo shined with a game-high 10 tackles, and Connor Renaud delivered a 35-yard interception return to momentarily shift momentum in the Eagles’ favor.
With the victory, the Wildcats look to build on this commanding performance next week, determined to establish themselves as a team to watch in the league.
